Portsmouth - Saltwater Fishing Report

Stripers Move into the Seacoast of NH

Striped Bass fishing is now here in New Hampshire. With the mild winter behind us I have found that the bait and the Stripers have moved in early. This week the river gave up some good size fish that I usually don’t see until later in the season.

Bob Menegay visiting from Florida was able to catch Stripers of all sizes from several keepers over 30” to many schoolies taken on fly and marabou jigs. Most of the bigger fish were taken while chunking the river. The birds were working and Stripers were busting baits, giving us the opportunity to catch them casting flies and jigs.

When fishing the Piscatqua River it is always amazing the difference in temperature and conditions once you leave the river and head past the lighthouse. This week was no exception as the temperature dropped about 10 degrees, the seas picked up and the fog was thick. Those who ventured out a little way were rewarded, as Mackerel were available at the 2KR buoy at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor. Use a little chum and jig Sabiki rigs with a diamond jig for catching these fun fish, which provide excellent live bait for Stripers. To keep the Mackerel in top shape for bait it is important to have a good live well that moves a lot of fresh water. Round live wells seem to work best. Soon Pollock will be available for live bait and they don’t seem to require as much water movement.

Trolling with tubes also produced a number of Stripers this week. Try red tubes and tip with sea worms for best results.

Good Fishing
