San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hello Everyone,
The river flow is around 900 cfs. The water is clear with a fair amount of small moss chunks. To all of you who follow my fishing report I want to say thanks. I have been very busy on the river so I apologize to all for being so long over due on a report. but here it is and what has been working for me.
The upper area is fishing good using #26 iron gray bodied and black ribbing with a black head pupa's and emergers. #18 brown San Juan worms are working. Small #26 black midge pupa's and emerger's. Large Griffin's Gnat's #16 {Dead Chicken} when the midges are clustering and the fish are gulping.
The main channel is fishing fair using gray #22 beatis nymphs and emerger's and the above midge patterns. The sand hole has been fishing good with cream, gray or olive #26 midge pupa's and larva.
The Texas hole on down to beatis bend has been fishing fair to good using the above patterns and black and gray or olive and gray #18-20 big macs.
Beatis bend on down has had a good beatis hatch until the last water flow change. Today there was a decent #18 PMD hatch with heads a gulping. #18 Hares ear nymph or a # 18 PMD's. Death row is fishing good with dries in the early afternoon. Simon Canyon on down to the bait water has a good small gray beatis hatch in the afternoon. #22 Gray foam wings or Johnny flasher's.
I want to make a comment on when the fishing get's tougher the more meticulous your presentation has to be to be successful. I tell my clients that there is about four things I need from them when nymphing, A DRAG FREE DRIFT with CLEAN UNTANGLED FLIES, and the desire to be successful. Presentation is everything on the San Juan River. I find that women and interested children listen better and do what I ask of them than the old know it all's that have fished every where and haven't learned a thing. The reason I mentioned this that if you are not cleaning your flies and getting a drag free drift, it is not going to work know matter how hard you, or the guide is trying to make it happen. We need your input to work as a team. The art of fly fishing is in line management. It's the cast to make the presentation, the drag free drift, the hook set, the play of the fish, and landing the fish. So the tougher the bite, the better you have to be. Try keeping your flies clean in the best drag free drift you can, and see if your not more successful.
Tight Lines to all,
Mark/ Blue Sky Flyfishing
