Oct. 3, 2010 San Juan River Fishing report

San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hello Everyone,
The river is flowing around 775 cfs. The water clarity is around 4 feet. Lots of moss. The water temp is 42-45 degrees near the top, close to the dam. The water temps warm the father you get down river get from the dam.
The upper areas, old catch and release, Cable Hole, and the upper flats has all been fishing good.
The patterns that have been working for me are #18-22 red larva's, #24-26 black, or iron gray krystal flash midges, no ribbing. #24 Gray scintilla midges, and #24-26 gray ribbed krystal flash midges. There is some dry fly action when the fish are rising to midge clusters. I like a black knatt cluster patter #18-22 depending on the cluster sizes. When nymphing use a short rigg depending on the depth of the bottom, or how deep the fish are suspended in the water column.
The main channel has been fishing ok using above patterns and big macs in the am. Late am to early pm, use beatis nymphs and emergers. #20-22 Brown or gray wd-40s, fluff beatis, pheasant tails. For emergers use RS2'sand foam wings.
Texas hole to the Gravel pit boat take out has been fishing good to great using #20-22 big macs, gray and red, gray and black, olive and black, and Abe's midge master. #16-18 Red larva's and #24-26 gray Johnny flasher's working all day. Late am, into the afternoon some beatis {BWO'S} have been coming off, some days stronger than others. For the nymph and emerger stages I like a #20-22 gray or brown RS2's, fluff beatis, root beers, {Trico pattern}, pheasant tails. For adults on the surface try a #22-26 parachute Adams. A gray post Adams works great also.
Hope this report helps you get hooked up. The river has been busy. The tree's are just starting to change with the peak in the next couple of weeks.
The lake has been fishing good for Pike and Small mouth bass. The Kokanee snagging season has started , people are doing best at night.
Tight Line's to all,
U.S.C.G. lic. Capt. Mark Nesbit
