San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hello Everyone,
The Juan is flowing around 500cfs. Water is very clear. Lots of moss and grass, gets worse in the afternoon. River habitat improvements are underway in the Kiddy Hole area and will start in the upper braids around 11/10/2011. Work should be complete around early December. I've heard rumors that they will drop the water flow to 250cfs when they start the upper braids improvements. The goal is to provide more fish holding habitat, and if we're lucky some new aquatic insect base. Hopefully larger bugs.
The river has been fishing good to awesome. The trees are just past peak colors. The crowds are thinning down and late fall fishing on the Juan is at it's best.
What has been working for me, The upper areas
have been all fishing good with black or gray #24-26 midge pupa's and #22-24 red larva's early am. Black or gray and black #24-26 Krystal flash midge. Light champagne Pink eggs or Oregon cheese eggs working.
The browns are in the spawn mode. The upper braids and sand hole are not the easiest to access now. The main channel is fishing good using #20-22 pheasant tails and RS2's and foam wings.
The Texas hole down to death row is fishing good to great. I've been using a #20-22 gray foam wing and just ripping fish. Gray Rs2' and Johnny flashes. The fish are full of gray midge pupa's and #18-20 brown or olive and black big macs. Good dry fly action using blue wing olive patterns, from about 10:30 am on.
Beatis bend and the top of death row has a good beatis hatch going from about 11:00 am on. Good dry fly action using #20-22 blue wing olive dry patterns.
Simon Canyon down to the Crusher hole take out fishing hot with Light pink eggs and pheasant tails early to mid-day. Lots of heads rising mid morning into the afternoon to beatis. and midges.
#20-22 Sparkle duns and olive comparaduns, parachute adams.
The bait waters to the village take out fishing good using light pink eggs and gray foam wings.
Come enjoy the Juan while the weather is nice and the crowds are gone.
The salmon snaggers are doing good at Navajo lake.
