New Mexico Fishing Report for The San Juan River

San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Fishing is excellent. The Spring break crowds have thinned out, the trees are budding, and the fish are looking up, eating Beatis.
The upper waters are fishing good, using cream and olive midge pupas #22-24s, red larva is doing OK #22-24. Try using a midge to Beatis combo.
The braids and ESPN hole is fishing good. Great sight fishing using cream & olive UFOs.
The kiddy hole is awesome, no pressure and hundreds of trout. Use short rig and midge patterns.
The main channel is OK, but has had a lot of fishing pressure lately.
From T- hole to end of quality water is fishing great. Midge patterns in early a.m. then the Beatis start to come off use PTs, wd-40s, RS-2s all fishing good #20-22s. River is flowing at 650cfs, 8-10’ visibility.
Upper waters, (Dam to upper flats.):
1. Midge larva’s, red, cream, chocolate , #18-24’s
2. UFOs choc. & cream #20-24’s
3. Gray RS-2 #22-24
4. Emerging midge patterns cream & olive pupas, KF’s #22-24s
5. Olive bugger’s in the slack waters below cable hole.
6.Shrimp and scuds 18-22’s
Main channel to T-hole:
1. Red larva’s #18-24s
2. Gray & choc. Wd-40,p.t., rs2, and foam wings
3. San Juan worms, various colors , worm brown being best
4. UFOs 20-24’s cream & olive
5. Scuds gray #22s
T-hole to bait waters:
1. Midge larvae red , cream & choc.#20-24’s
2. Midge emerger, zebra & KF’s olive.& cream #20-24s
3. UFOs olive. & cream # 20-24’s
4. Beatis patterns, (choc. or gray) foam wings, CDC RS-2s
5.Dry fly Beatis patterns, parachute Adams, sparkle comparaduns, b.w.o thorax.#20-22.
