San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Winter is really here, with the morning temperatures starting in the teens and getting to the freezing mark of 32 just before noon. Highs are ranging from upper 30's to 50ish. Flow is at 340 cfs and the clarity of the water is down to less than 3 feet due to the reservoir turning over.
The upper mile of the river has seen the highest number of number of anglers, the fishing in this area is more consistant during the cold days and nights. Also some days the flesh of the salmon is getting chopped up and sent through the dam. On these days white bunny leaches have been “magic” . Orange San Juan Worms are also working like magic in some spots. Red Larva, cream colored UFO’s have also been reported working in the upper area.
Texas Hole down to the lower flat, best with an orange San Juan worm with a larva in the morning and then the worm with an emerger trailing. Size #22 red larva and a flashback Pheasant tail are also catching fish. Remember lower flow...you will need to lighten up and shorten your rig.
Lower flats through Simon Canyon still the worm and a emerger. A good choice for the emerger is a brown RS-2, foam wing. On cloudy days the fish will rise to a comparadun or an Adams.
Forcast for the next week is warmer, highs in the 50's and the nights aren’t nearly as cold.
Remember our winter rates and save money for the new year.
Tight lines
Mark
