New Mexico Fishing Report for The San Juan River

San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

New Fishing Report

Hello everyone,

Fishing report updated 5/17/ 04

The river flow is around 350 cfs, the river clarity is 3 - 4 feet. As of today the river is fishing good to great. . The river has a good color to it. The dry fly fishing has started. The fish were gulping down beatis hard this afternoon. My trip finished early today. So I took advantage of it. I hooked up with a really nice fish on my third cast using a size # 20 blue wing olive dry fly. That’s the hoots ! The river flow has increased by 100 cfs, and has helped in spreading the fish out, which hopefully will spread the fishing pressure out. Please be courteous and respect each other’s water, and don’t tie up one area all day long. The polite thing to do is catch a few fish then move on so others can work the waters too. The low flows has concentrated the fish and in turn the fishermen in one area. Fly fishing technique tip: When your dry fly fishing let the fish go down then lift, there is know need to set hard. The hardest thing to do is not get to excited and take it away from the fish prematurely by not letting the fish go down as it take’s the fly. The hole visual thing is just hard not to react to quickly. Try letting the fish go down first before you lift, and see if your hook up’s on the dries are working better for you.

Tight Lines to all,

Mark.
