San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

The river is fishing as good as it gets. The San Juan flow is 500-535 cfs, the water clarity is 4-5 feet. The upper areas are having a good small black midge #22-26 hatch early am, with some good dry fly action using black midge clusters or griffins knatt#20-16. The river from Texas - hole down to the take out basically for me, the fish are eating beatis, big time, pheasant tails, foam wings, fluff beatis, wd-40 #20-24. The dry fly action is heating up with a good midge hatch early am, and the blue wing olives (beatis) in the late am into the mid afternoon. I like a olive or gray sparkle dun or compardun #20-22, at the beginning of the rise, and switching to a gray wing or calf hair parachute Adams #20-22 when you see the adults on the surface water.
The lake is still fishing good, with the Small mouth bass bite being active. I broke off a nice4-5lb smallie last Sunday on a top water popper. He smoked me, then puked up the popper with the broken 8lb tippet. we took a few pike and a nice large mouth. The carp bite is hot for carp candy.
