San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hello Everyone,
The river flow is 475 cfs. Water clarity is around 3 feet, The water is just off-colored. There is some moss at all levels in the water column, but not a problem for fishing.
The Fall Crowds are gone. The days are warming up nice into the low 50's and the Bite is good to great. If you can do it, it's a great time to fish the San Juan River.
The upper areas, old catch and release, and cable hole area has been fishing good to great using a #16-20 yellow egg to a #20-22 orange larva. This has been working good all the way from the dam boundary to the gravel pit take out. #24-26 Black, or dark gray Krystal flash midge working good, short rigged if fish are dimpling the surface. #24-26 gray Johnny flash midge working also.
Texas Hole down to the gravel pit has been fishing great. Early morning it's hard to beat the egg, orange larva rig. I've been doing well using a #24-26 black Krystal Flash midge, the gray #26 Johnny flash to gray , or dark gray Krystal flash wing midge also working. Around mid to late am the beatis have been crawling some days and hatching on most. #20-22 Gray foam wings, loop wings, or cdc wing RS2's, and #20-22 gray Johnny flashes have been working good in the early to mid afternoon. For rising sipping heads try a #22 gray Adams sparkle dun. For gulping fish try a #20-24 gray parachute Adams, or other beatis adult mayfly patterns. Leeches are working also.
Below Death Row to the Gravel Pit take out is fishing good using Gray or chocolate beatis nymphs and emergers in the pm.
To all Duck Hunter's who hunt the San Juan River Area. Please Pick up your spent shot shells as much as possible. It is a NM Game and Fish law, read the Small Game hunting proclamation. I love to waterfowl hunt here. Last week in one area I picked-up over two boxes of spent shell hulls. It is like cigarette butts to a non-smoker. It is a privilege to hunt here, please respect it so we don't lose it.
Happy Holiday's and Tight Lines to All!
