San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hello Everyone,
The river flow is around 485-500 cfs. The water clarity is around 3-4' feet. Not to mossy.
The upper areas are fishing good using egg patterns, { yellow, egg, Golden nugget, Oregon Cheese, Apricot supreme, or pink} and orange, pink and red larva's#18-22, o-jays. Good midge hatch most days starting mid to late morning. Black, or dark gray #24-26 Krystal flash wing midge. If heads are rising, try midge cluster patterns. The main channel is fishing good using the above in the am. Late morning into early afternoon there is some beatis coming off.
From the T-hole down to the gravel pit is all fishing good to great. Good beatis hatch some days. #20-22 Gray rs2 and Johnny flashes working with the above upper river patterns.
I attended a NM game and Fish meeting last night. There will be a great river habitat improvement project hopefully starting very soon. There will be a barrier placed at the top of the braids, bottom of upper flats that will increase the flows into the braids and less water flow in the main channel.
They will also ad different types of barriers in this area with the idea of improving the flows and fish holding areas.
This will increases the water depth from 6-10 inches at the 500 cfs flow, in this area. They will also dig out some of the better runs and make them deeper. The goal is to improve the fish holding capabilities of this area. They are hoping to maybe get some new diversity in aquatic insects, by slowing the water down some and giving it a chance to warm.
Bottom Line is that this will be great improvement for this area. Hopefully they will be able to get started very soon. It will take about a month to do. Their also going to make a stilling basin pond for the arroyo that flows into the kiddy hole and try to keep it from silting it up. All very positive improvements.
Tight Line's to All!
