San Juan River Fishing Report 01/06/2012

Capt. Mark Nesbit
January 6, 2012
San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hello Everyone,
Hope all of you had a happy holiday season. The river has been busy during the holidays. Lots of duck hunters in the early am, then the fishermen get out. I was out yesterday and there is still a fair amount of people out. The weather has been great for this time of year. The new area in the braids is awesome. Lots of mid - thigh to deeper holes holding good numbers of large fish. Take care for there is some deep water.
The river is flowing around 460cfs. The water visibility is around 2-3 feet. Some moss.
The river is fishing good to great. Small #24-26 red larva or cream, and gray working good, being trailed behind a white, black or natural bunny leech in the early am. Mid morning some day's has produced a good hatch of #24-26 gray midges. I like using a #24-26 gray or black krystal flash zebra midge. Yesterday from Three Island run down to Crusher hole a small gray trico was coming off. #22-24 Gray Johnny Flash or foam wings where working. The fish are in the spawn mode egg patterns working. I like Oregon Cheese or Golden Nugget.
Found some heads that responded to a #22 gray post parachute adams, or comparadum, down in the last chance area.
The lake has turned but the water clarity varies. If the weather stays nice the fishing should just improve.
Some things to consider. If the night temps are real cold, 20 or lower the fish will move into the deeper slower water. If the night time temps are warmer you find more fish in the shallow riffles.

San Juan River Fishing Forecast:

The spawn season is happening and the bows are dropping eggs everywhere.
The Pike bite should be starting at the lake.
