San Juan River Fishing Report 02/23/2012

Capt. Mark Nesbit
February 22, 2012
San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hello Everyone,
The river flow is around 487 cfs as of today. The water is pretty clear with 3-4 foot visibility. Some moss, but not to bad.
The upper areas have been fishing fair to good using a #16-18 golden nugget egg, trailed by a #24-26 zebra midge with silver wire wrap.
Around 9;30am -10:00 the midges start coming off.
Some days the hatch has been strong, other days not so good. #24-26 black Krystal flash midge has working good. Cream , gray, and olive larva's working. #18-22 red larva's still working. If the midges are coming off, look close to the banks and is there any fishing rising for the clusters. If they are, try your favorite dark midge cluster pattern and make a good presentation and stick a fish or two. I like a #18 black midge cluster pattern that looks like a beetle or spider. #18-20 black ant patterns with a parachute wrap.
The Texas Hole down to the Crusher Hole take out was fishing good to great. In the early am a white bunny to a #22 red larva was getting crunched hard. Golden nugget or yellow egg, trailed by a #24-26 black and silver ribbed midge pupa. Late am weak beatis hatch has been coming off. A gray or chocolate foam wing size 22 kept the rod bent for us. The beatis has been coming off all the way down to crusher hole. A #20-22 pheasant tails. fluff beatis, root beers,RS2's, and Johnny flashes. #22-24 Parachute Adams or gray post Parachute Adams, gray sparkle duns.
A big black leech or bugger fished deep in slow water during low light might get that bite from that big one you have been looking for. Hope this helps get the line tight, rod bent on the Juan.
Tight Lines to all.
