San Juan River, NM Fishing Report 02/21/2016

Capt. Mark Nesbit
February 21, 2016
San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hello Everyone,
The river is flowing around 460 cfs. water clarity is about 2-3'. Still a lot of grass and moss from the river, and some from the thermocline on the lake.
When the lake is turning over, good choices for flies are #20-22 gray scuds, #16-24 red larva's and bunny leeches, or wooly bugger's in natural , olive, and black. Lots of small #22-26 black midges coming off in the upper areas in the mid-am. Small black midge emerger's and for you head hunter's Dries would be black midge cluster's from #24-16. If the fish are just sipping and barley making rings try a single midge dry or a very small cluster pattern. if there gulping try your larger black midge cluster dry patterns.
The Texas hole has been hot. Good patterns for the T-Hole have been red or orange larvs#18-22, gray scuds#20-22 black midge patterns #22-26
and yes some mayflies, beatis are hatching around mid am. Chocolate or gray foam wings20-22, Rs2' #20-22 flashback pheasant tails #20-22
Below the T-hole fishing ahs been good to fair depending on conditions. Now that it is warming up the lower river is fishing better and will just improve as temps rise.
I hope this helps you get a tight line, and tight lines to all
Mark

San Juan River Fishing Forecast:

As of a couple of weeks ago it looked like we were going to have a long high water period. We'll it has been dry and if we don't get more snow pack in the high country we will have a short high water flow or none at all. If we have a high water flush the river will fish awesome this year.

Target Species:

Rainbow and brown trout, bass, northern pike
