San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report
Hello Everyone,
The river is flowing around 775cfs. The water is very clear with a fair amount of moss all thru the water column. The upper areas, old catch and release, cable hole and the upper flats is fishing good to great, sight fishing for some major hogs up in the tops of the runs. What has been working for me is a #24-26 gray midge pupa's and emergers, being trailed by a #22 gray and black 3M Mark's magic midge. In fact that is all I've been fishing down to the lower flats.
From the Texas hole down I've had very good luck with the above midges followed by a gray RS2 foam wing.
From Simon Canyon down to the Crusher hole has been fishing good from early afternoon using a #18 PMD palomino colored RS2, to a #20 gray or chocolate RS2 foam wing. For the adult or Emerging adult rising to the surface, a #18 yellow sparkle Dunn, or a #18 palomino colored parachute will get the crunch. The weather has been nice with a afternoon thunderstorm to cool off the afternoon.
San Juan River Fishing Forecast:
The Dog Days of Summer? Last few years Late July into late August has fished good. With the flows up some what the fish are more active and are burning up more calories. More aggressive bite. When sight fishing watch the fish you are fishing too. Are they being active or just watching the world go bye? I always look for the most greedy and aggressive fish possible with the dunce cap on. They make a prime target for sight fishing.
Target Species:
Trophy Rainbow, Brown Trout, Bass, Pike and Carp
