Spring has Sprung on The San Juan River.

San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hello Everyone,
The river flow was 470cfs as of this afternoon. The water visibility is 3-4 feet. Kinda chunky as far as moss. Not much has changed. The upper areas are still fishing good, have been fishing pretty much the same junk as the last report. Small red larva's trailed behind your favorite bunny leech, or #20-22 olive larva's. Black midge pupa's and Krystal flash wing midges in size #24-26 still working. some heads gulping when the midges are clustering. The new re-hab area is fishing great, lots of fish to keep a tight line with the chance of feeling a heavy head shaker.
My client had a very successful day the other day using #20-22 black and grey big mac, and my grey 3M midge. We used this rig all the way down to the Crusher Hole take out. Had one fly hook around 50 fish before it just became to torn up for a decent silhouette.
The newest thing since last report is that the beatis (BWO's) are starting to get more active
from T-Hole down. Jack's hole below T-hole the fish had some beatis nymphs, #22 pheasant tails in their throat samples.
Duranglers Corner down to the take out has had a good beatis hatch late am into late afternoon, most days. There is a large gray and black #18-20 midge coming in the afternoon in this area also. I like a #22 Adams grey sparkle dunn for the breaking midge or beatis emergers and a #20-22 grey or white calf hair post for the adult BWO'S on the surface.
I hope this helps all of you to get a tight Line.
In the lower areas try trailing a #22 gray or choc foam wing or Johnny flash a foot or two behind your Adams or Dry of choice.

San Juan River Fishing Forecast:

Spring is here and so are the swallows, also the Beatis hatch is starting.
For those that are interested the Lake water temps is still in the low 50's. The lake will start to wake up in the next couple of weeks as the water temps get in the mid 50's

Target Species:

Rainbow, Brown Trout, Bass, Carp, and Pike
