Lake Ontario, Oneida Lake, Sandy Pond Fishing Report

Capt. Troy Creasy
July 12, 2008
Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

This weekend is the 14th Annual Oswego County Pro-Am Tournament.

Hundreds of top anglers from across the Northeast will be competing for cash and prizes. Amateur and professional teams compete for cash and prizes. Teams fish from the ports of Oswego and Mexico. Weigh station located behind Best Western Captain's Quarters Hotel. Weigh-in begins at 2:30pm each day (Sat. and Sun). Feel free to stop by and catch the excitement.

King Salmon are finally showing up along the eastern shoreline of Lake Ontario.

The action this week has been good. Salmon prefer to be in or just above the ice cold water. Local charter captains are finding the salmon from 90 to 150 feet down oven 150 to 300 feet. Start early with white e-chips and white flies and then switch to green and chrome echips and green atomic-flies flies as the sun gets higher in the sky.

The walleye bite is on at Oneida Lake. The same areas continue to produce nice catches of walleyes - Shackelton Shoals, Messenger Reef and Messenger Shoals. Trolling and drifting along with almost any application is successful. Purple and black jigs tipped with a nightcrawler are working very well and the sonar is picking up a few fish as well. You can also catch pickerel, bass, catfish and perch as well.

The bass fishing on Sandy pond has been good. Most fish are being caught in16-20 ft. of water. The warmer weather predicted over the next few days should increase the activity closer to the shore.

Bass fishing in and around Mexico bay is providing some really good catches. Fish small jigs tipped with Mister Twister grubs. Slowly bounce the jigs off rocky bottoms and work the shoals and drop-offs. Crabs and worms are always a good bet. Also try the ares around 4 mile point in Scriba and the a the green can just west of Oswego. Worms and crayfish drifted along the bottom are always the top producers there, but many anglers prefer to cast or troll small crankbaits.

There has been some bass and northern pike action on Sandy pond and Lakeview Marsh, especially along the weed lines. Cast spinnerbaits, rubberworms, small crankbaits and of course don't forget the jitterbugs and buzzbaits for some hot top water action.

Now is a great time to schedule a fishing trip.. The kids are out of school, the fishing is good and area captains are available for lake charters.
