Lake Ontario, Oneida Lake, Sandy Pond Fishing Report

Capt. Troy Creasy
July 24, 2008
Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

Not a lot of time for updates this time of year, sorry.

Here we go!

Although conditions have been tough, good numbers of of brown trout and salmon are being found in 45 to 80 feet of water. This week, my parties landed a total of 52 browns,2 steelhead and two kings over the course of 9 charters. Some great days, some tough days, but No Kings to be found for us???? Again I hear great things out of Canada and the west end, so we can only hope they will show.

Dreamweaver spoons in black & silver, glow green, lemon/lime and the NK Diehard spoon are all working well, as are the E-chip flashers and flies in green or white. Copper, leadcore, dipsys and riggers are all taking fish. The wind is howling out of the west after the latest storm went through and blew us off the lake this afternoon. Maybe this will bring them in. Cross your fingers.

Fish Shots!!

I had the honor of spending two afternoons with an incredible 11 yr old boy and his family from outside of Pittsburgh Pa, Conrad is suffering from an inoperable brain tumor and he is one of the Make A Wish Foundation children. This non- profit organization grants wishes to special children and Conrad's wish was to take his family to New York and go fishing.

I was more than happy to make sure this happened. We didn't catch a lot, but all the kids fought fish and had a wonderful time. My heart goes out to Conrad and his entire family. We wish you all well and our prayers are with you.

Jack and Jack spent a few days with me and we managed some good fish including a nice steelhead and this 14 pound brown!

When we do find a King they are nice healthy fish!

Bass fishing in and around Oswego and ford Shoals is providing some really good catches. Fish small jigs tipped with Mister Twister grubs. Slowly bounce the jigs off rocky bottoms and work the shoals and drop-offs. Crabs and worms are always a good bet. Also try the ares around 4 mile point in Scriba and the a the green can just west of Oswego. Worms and crayfish drifted along the bottom are always the top producers there, but many anglers prefer to cast or troll small crankbaits.

There has been some bass and northern pike action on Sandy pond and Lakeview Marsh, especially along the weed lines. Cast spinnerbaits, rubberworms, small crankbaits and of course don't forget the jitterbugs and buzzbaits for some hot top water action.

On Oneida Lake fishing with jigs and worms is still producing some great catches. Generally they have switched to suspended and trolled baits by now, but the anglers bouncing bottom are still taking some very impressive catches. Look for bass in about 6 ft. of water using crayfish and worms and panfish are doing well along the shoreline.

Now is a great time to schedule a lake charter. The kids are out of school and area captains are available for lake charters. Just log on to Lakeontariooutdoors.com There you will find, daily fishing reports, numerous links to great sites and area businesses, as well as lake charters and river guides.

I am about out of open days. Contact us soon if you want to fish with us in 2008.

See you on the water. Troy
