Lake Ontario, Oneida Lake, Sandy Pond Fishing Report

Capt. Troy Creasy
August 25, 2008
Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

The Saga continues.

Decent catches when we have good conditions and terrible catches when the wind blows which is about every other day.

When we get out, (lost two trips today). Anglers in the Oswego, Mexico and Pulaski area have been catching salmon from 200 ft. of water inshore to 50 ft. Just east and west of Oswego the thermocline has been 40-60 ft. below the surface. A variety of bait is working... flies, spoons and j-plugs. E-Chip & Spin Doctor attractors with the Hammer, green glow, sweetpea,Big Fin glowand Mirage have been taking fish. A variety of spoons have also been working well including the old green glow NK mag, the Michigan Stinger Natural Born Killer and theGator in the magnum and stingray size.

Here are a few from the the past week.

Eric Markell on his summer trip. He always seems to hit it right.

This one fell for a green e-chip flasher and the infamous Atomik Big Fin Glow fly.

This chrome sow could not resist the Hammer Fly!

This one tipped the scales at 29 pounds!

Virgil and the boys with a real good catch!

Did a three boat trip with Cold Steel and the Other Woman Charters. Everyone caught fish!

Long time guest Craig Palmer with a 15 # BT that hammered the old Luhr Jensen Salt & Pepper #3 J-Plug!

Another good catch we managed between the tough ones. Two words; Weird & Windy are the only way we can describe the 2008 lake fishing season.

The walleye action has been good on Oneida Lake. Troll the deeper water pulling lead core in five or six colors. Jr. thundersticks and rapalas are working well. Fish anywhere from Buoy 121 to Buoy 109 but fish the north side of the buoys. Bass are active along the rock piles using crayfish.

Conditions have remained about the same in the Oswego river and the river is producing catfish and bass are taking minnows and worms. Walleyes are hitting nightcrawlers in the harbor area and perch are active behind Breitbeck Park using worms and minnows. Anglers are finding bass near the breakwall and the Lighthouse, at flatrock, Ford Shoals and Smith Beach.

I hear there is some action on the salmon river for a few early kings & coho'sthat came up. There should be a fishable number of fish in the river at this time. Don't be afraid to do some scouting.

Bass fishing in and around mexico bay and Oswego is slow. Fish small jigs tipped with Mister Twister grubs. Slowly bounce the jigs off rocky bottoms and work the shoals and drop-offs. Crabs and worms are always a good bet.
