Lake Ontario, Salmon River, Oswego Harbor Fishing Report

Capt. Troy Creasy
May 1, 2011
Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

April is over and what a month it was. It may have started slow but everyday just got better.
All the rain and high water which has been a hardship and inconvenience to many has in fact been a catalyst for the exceptional fishing on the Salmon River and the lakeshore in Mexico Bay and the Oswego area.

Steelhead are being caught from top to bottom on the Salmon River
Worms, beads, flies, spinners and egg sacs are working well. Fish the fastest deepest runs you can find. Don't waste your time in the slow pools. The fish are looking for food and oxygen.

The Oswego Harbor is on fire, producing limit catches of brown trout as well as a few nice atlantic salmon. I know of several weighing in between 10 and 12 pounds. What a nice bonus to find when you are really only looking for 3 to 5 pound trout.

The entire lakeshore is fishing well as boaters are finding brown trout trolling along the shore in 10 to 20 ft. of water, primarily at the mouths of the tributaries. Stickbaits and small spoons in black and silver are working the best. Troll slow and concentrate your efforts in and around the warmest water.

The Bull head fishing is underway and conditions are good. Top spots include North and South Sandy Pond, The Salmon River Estuary, The Grindstone Marsh and the Little Salmon River.

What else can I say, Spring is finally here and the bite is on. I suggest you make plans to fish very soon somewhere, somehow with someone in the Lake Ontario region.
I have river openings on May 9 & 10 and lake trips openings on May 15, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 30
