Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report
Today is Monday July 9, 2012.
The standings in the LOC Derby as of this morning shows that fish caught in the Lake Ontario waters of Orleans County hold the following places.
Grand Prize winner, 5 places in the Salmon Division, 5 places in the Brown trout division(including 1st & 2nd place), 1 place in the Lake Trout Division,4 paces in the Rainbow/Steelhead trout division and in the Youth Division 1st place Salmon and 1st place Brown trout.
I'd have to say that fishing in Lake Ontario off the shores of Orleans County is very productive for big fish.
Riggers 50 to 80 feet down, divers 180 to 250 feet back and 400 copper rigs seem to be the hot tickets right now.
Some of the spoons mentioned have been Purple Clowns, Purple thunder, Gold 42 second, Nukes, Hog Wilds and Dolphins.
More fish seem to be taking a spinner fly combination except for the Brown trout who seem to favor the spoons.
The number of people fishing the Erie Canal Derby (July 5 thru July 15) has greatly increased this year as has the size of the fish being weighed in.
Great catches of Smallmouth bass, Catfish, Walleye and Sheep head are being reported.
On Lake Alice big Bluegill are being caught around the buoy at the Waterport Dam and in the evening and early night great catches of both Walleye and Crappie are being reported.
Glenwood Lake is producing good catches of Smallmouth bass and Catfish along with some big Channel cats between the two lakes.
There is a rumor that the grass bed off Marshall Road in Lake Ontario is a great area for Perch right now.
The "Oak" from the Waterport Dam to the point is still producing a great variety of fish.
Let's make everyday a great fishing day, Right here in Orleans County.
