Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

Today is Wednesday January 8, 2014.
Well like the rest of the northeast part of the country, we are in the deep freeze right now.
It's been several days since the thermometer has been able to climb out of the single digits during the day.
With the winds that are accompanying the cold temperatures, the wind chill has been well into the minus numbers.
With all of this in mind, most of the smaller tributaries within Orleans County are either iced over except for the fast moving water areas or at a minimum filling with slush.
Oak Orchard River has plenty of open water in the upper reaches and then again at the point.
I'm surprised that with ice forming on most of the waterways within the county, I have not seen much action in the ice fishing arena yet.
But wait, starting this coming Friday daytime temperatures are going to once again rise above the freezing mark and continue for an extended period of time.
Could this truly be the January thaw?
But what about the fishing you say.
Well where you can find open water catches of Steelhead/ Rainbow trout are being reported with an occasional Brown trout thrown into the mix.
With the thaw close to being upon us you should be able to find more open water but also you should find higher water levels so please be aware of your surroundings during this time period.
From Point Breeze on Lake Ontario, the 2013 World Fishing Network's Ultimate Fishing Town USA and the rest of Orleans County, Let's make everyday a great fishing day right here in Orleans County.
