Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

Today is Wednesday April 23, 2014.
The weather is slowly turning into a more spring like pattern with temperatures ranging from the high 40s to the low 60s during the daytime.
Occasional rain showers should keep flows in the tributaries of Orleans County at moderate levels.
Speaking of tributaries on April 25th Sandy Creek will be treated for Lamprey by the D.E.C. and Canadian D.N.R. as well as Marsh Creek going into Oak Orchard River on April 27 and 28 this year.
If you see people dumping chemicals in those tributaries at those times that is the purpose.
I'm told by the DEC that this should have no affect on the trout and salmon.
On another inland waterway, the filling of the Erie Canal has begun and the canal should be reopened on May 3rd this year.
There are more new regulations when using Brookfield Power's facility on Oak Orchard River including the use of PFDs when entering any waters that border the facility including the portion of the peninsula owned by Brookfield.
Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the new regulations when entering their property.
As far as the fishing goes, on Lake Ontario the near shore fishery is excellent with catches of Brown trout, Lake Trout, Coho salmon and Steelhead/Rainbow trout being taken both by boats working the shoreline and individuals casting from shore.
Oak Orchard River still has good fishing for Brown trout and Rainbow trout as well as Perch, Walleye and Bass although Walleye and Bass are still out of season.
The other tributaries also are providing some good fishing which includes Bullhead.
On Lake Alice waters are warming up and should start providing a good fishery for Bluegill and Crappie very soon.
From Point Breeze on Lake Ontario, the 2013 World Fishing Network's Ultimate Fishing Town USA and the rest of Orleans County, Let's make everyday a great fishing day right here in Orleans County.
