Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

Today is Wednesday May 7, 2014.
A quick check of water temperatures from around Orleans County has Lake Ontario at the point at 42.6, Oak Orchard at the point at 42.6, Oak Orchard at the bridges 50.3 Johnson Creek at Kuckville 54.5, Lake Alice at Waterport 52.3 and the Erie Canal at Albion 50.6.
With warmer weather predicted well into next week these temperatures should be on the rise.
Although fishing pressure is way down on the tributaries within Orleans County, there is still some great action taking place for both Steelhead/Rainbow trout and Brown trout.
One of the better locations is the upper reaches of the Oak from the power dam to past the Archers Club.
Speaking of the power dam please be aware of the new rules posted by Brookfield Power for those utilizing their property.
These rules include the wearing of PFDs when entering the water from their property.
On Lake Alice fishing is just beginning to pick up due to the colder water temperatures.
For the next 5 years the DEC will be stocking Lake Alice with Walleye.
At the end of those 5 years they will evaluate the project to see if they should continue stocking.
On Lake Ontario the near shore fishing has been nothing short of spectacular with people catching a broad variety of the cold water species and occasionally a good size Bass.
Of course Bass season doesn't open until the 3rd Saturday in June so for now it's catch and immediately release.
The Spring LOC Derby is in full swing with some great weights being put on the leader board.
The derby runs thru this Sunday, May 11th so there's still time to enter and win some great cash prizes.
From Point Breeze on Lake Ontario the 2013 World Fishing Network's Ultimate Fishing Town USA and the rest of Orleans County, let's make everyday a great fishing day right here in Orleans County.
