Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

Today is Wednesday May 20, 2014.
Water temperatures from around Orleans County are as follows: Lake Ontario outside Oak Orchard Harbor 52.3, Oak Orchard Harbor 56.9, Oak Orchard River at the bridges 55.9, Johnson creek at Kuckville 54.7, Lake Alice at the Kenyonville Bridge 58.1 and the Erie Canal in Albion 57.5.
Lake Ontario fishing has moved out slightly from the on shore fishing.
The best action has been in the 50 to 80 feet of water range.
Good reports of a mixed bag of fish including Steelhead/Rainbow trout, Coho and Chinook salmon along with Lake trout and an occasional Brown trout are being reported.
Both stick baits and spoons are taking the majority of the fish with no real set color pattern yet.
This week Chinook salmon, Lake Trout and Atlantic salmon have been stocked either in Oak Orchard River or in Lake Ontario off the shores of Orleans County.
For the next 3 weekends there are major tournaments on the Western end of Lake Ontario so information may be a little tough to get.
In Orleans County June 7 & 8 will be the first Oak Orchard Open Tournament.
This event will feature a new format in that there will be only one entry group and will feature a 10 fish limit with 5 to be Salmon and 5 to be Trout.
Entry fee is $400.00 per boat for this event.
More information may be found on the Lake Ontario United website.
June 6th will be the annual Condor Derby which is based on your best 3 fish.
Entry fee is $100.00 for this event.
The weigh-in for both events will be held outside the Black North Inn at the Point.
Off the jetties at Point Breeze catches of Perch, Northern pike and even Brown trout and Steelhead/Rainbow trout are being taken.
I'm sad to say that for you who use the Waterport Bridge as one of your favorite fishing spots on Lake Alice have lost that spot for the majority of the summer while major repairs are completed on that structure.
Speaking of Lake Alice, fishing has picked up with good catches of Crappie and some good Perch are being reported but Bluegills seem to be hard to find.
Good to great catches of Bass are being reported on all of the smaller lakes and tributaries within Orleans County, but please remember that Bass season opens on the 3rd Saturday in June do please continue to practice catch and release until then.
From Point Breeze on Lake Ontario, the 2013 World Fishing Network's Ultimate Fishing Town USA and the rest of Orleans County. Let's make everyday a great fishing day right here in Orleans County.
