Fishing Report for New York - Long Island North Shore

Capt. Robin Calitri
May 27, 2004
Long Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

BIG News from Captain Robin Calitri

Long Island is in full tilt. The regular haunts are producing fish. Montauk has fluke and bass. The Western South Shore is fishing well. Captain John McMurray is chasing bass in shallow water while Captain Brendan McCarthy is finding big bass on the fly in the deeper areas of the Jamaica bay. I guided Dan Feldman if Salty Flyrodders and Jeff Wert of Ohio to some fast action with blues in Jamaica Bay.

From the East end, local fly sharpie, Jim delGrosso is finding Bass to 30 inches and school blues on the fly around Gardiners Island.

There are fish every where on the North shore with the western end producing brute bass to 50 lbs.

Emory Butts has be doing well in fresh water with pickeral and those bass that bight before the season opens.

I just returned froma great road trip fishing Venice Florida with my sons Scot and Captain Todd. We took snook under the lights at night, jumped a couple of big tarpon on the fly. Todd also took a 25lb King Mackeral on a fly under a school of tarpon. We did a gear run. We fished live bait off a wreck. After a couple of sharks Captain Todd broke off two rigs on bottom. When I hooked the same bottom, it began to move. After a bruising hour and 1/2 we landed a Goliath Grouper with an estimated weight of 350 pounds.

This week we will fish the Merrimack river in northern Mass. This river holds unbelievable numbers of striped bass. If you are interested in fishing with Captain Todd Calitri he works at Alaska Sportsmans Lodge and they still have a few openings. I have a few adventures planned for special clients.
