Long Island - Saltwater Fishing Report
Captain Robin Calitri
Captain Robin Calitri reporting on Long Island New York with some tidbits from the Merrimack River in Northern Massachusetts.
June is a crazy month! I fished the Merrimack at the beginning of June and it was what I call “stupid fishing”. There were bass everywhere from the first cast to the last. Most were smallish schoolies but each day my son Scot and son Captain Todd caught keepers. Big bunker or herring patterns were the key to the bigger fish.
On the North Shore, Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor has bass of all sizes. Fly guys tend to get schoolies in the shallows with bigger fish under bunker. Small blues are around for the taking.
Simon George of Great Britain and angler John took bass and blues in Jamaica Bay on June 7. I guided them in “One More Cast”. One fish was over 32inches on the fly. Rumor has it that big Bass want live bunker?
I fished the Hamptons on the fourth with local artist Jim DelGrosso. WE saw bass all over the flats and caught a few. I took a nice keeper fishing a giant bunker fly in a rip. On June ninth, I fished out east with Emory Butts and buddy Gene. Gene caught the bass and blues. I sighted the bass while poling the flats but they were very spooky and difficult to get to take. I managed a couple of fluke on a clouser while Emory fought with birds.
