Fishing Report for New York - Long Island North Shore

Capt. Robin G Calitri
May 28, 2006
Long Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

2006 OFF to a RUNNING START

Fishing friends! It has been a long off-season but I have much to fill you in about. I am operating a new, bigger and faster boat. It is a Scout 235 Center Console named CSicAgain. It fishes great and is stabile platform to chase Tuna with. I also am hosting a website at LongIslandFlyFishing.com. Check it out.

Tamar and Richard Martin enjoyed a charter in Huntington on May 28. The bass were cooperative, but wanted the fly deep. Richard managed afew on intermediate and floating line. He could have loaded the boat with a full sink but he is a fine and pure angler who give the fish a chance. They are feeding on loads of sand eels and squid.

I fished the Manhattan Cup on May 19th. It was a great event for the Fishermen’s Conservation Association. Frank Criscitelli and David Fallon are to be lauded for their hard work and pulling off a huge success when we had hail, gusts of wind to 50mph and torrential rain. I am super proud of my anglers. Doug Bird took third in the bluefish-fly division and Alan James Robinson Took second in the Striper- artificial category with a 19-½ pound beauty, caught within sight of the Statue of Liberty.

Mitch Bernstein and Emory Butts have been scoring well off my boat. Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor are fishing well with schoolies to 25 inches. On a recent rip to the Peconic Bay, Mitch and I doubled up. He took an 8 ½ Weakie on a chartreuse buck tail while I landed a fly rod,Twenty- Two pound Bass on chartreuse and white half and half.

Captain Todd Calitri just completed hosting a mother ship operation to the Marquesas off Key West, Florida. His clients had fine accommodations, food and jumped Tarpon every day. Brother Scot and I joined Todd for a week of flats, tarpon chasing off Key West, the first week of May. We saw hundreds of tarpon and got a few to bight and actually Scot and I brought fish to the boat. What beast a tarpon is on the fly!

I still have some dates open to fish Huntington, Orient or Montauk on my Scout or Jamaica Bay with Captain John McMurray. Todd will be hosting another Mother ship operation next May. Contact me if you have the slightest interest. Todd will be off to Alaska where he is the head guide and the Alaska Sportsman Lodge. Congratulations to Brian Kraft for being the owner-operator of the Orvis Lodge of the Year.
