Long Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

All kind of fishy stuff

Join us for special fishing opportunities!

Captain Todd Calitri

There are some places that when timed right become unbelievable adventures. If you have fished with us before, you know that the experience will be professional, intense and fun. With the same effort that helped make The Alaska Sportsman’s Lodge, the Orvis Endorsed Lodge of the year, we will make your trip memorable!

Montauk, New York The fall run is the place to be! During November, 2006 there will be blitzes of striped bass and bluefish like seen nowhere else in the world. There are also possible shots at false albacore and perhaps even a bluefin tuna. We use fly and light tackle and the fish can be huge. We can make travel and accommodation arrangements for you and guide you to some unreal fishing on either the 235 Scout or the 18 Maritime skiff. A guided day on the water is $500 (a gas surcharge may be added). Log on to LongIslandFlyFishing.com.

Imagine having a well-appointed, mothership stationed amid the spring run of Tarpon in the Keys We will host 2 anglers per week out of Key West in May, 2007. There will be a flats boat and guide for each angler to get you shots at the silver king. The cost will be $12K (per two guests) for 5 days fishing and 5 nights aboard the mothership. This trip is all inclusive from Key West. ($10K for 1 guide)

The Alaska Sportsmans Lodge located on the Kvichak river in Bristol Bay, has some of the largest salmon runs in the world and is famous for its amazing rainbow trout . We still have some available dates for 2007. Log on to fishasl.com.

NEW YORK FALL MADNESS!

I can’t imagine why anyone is not fishing at this time of the year? The weather and the fish are in fall mode and the recreational boaters are gone. There are three major parts to my report this week. These are; Tuna off New England, Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor and Montauk Madness.

My son Scot Calitri and friend Tom, chased the Tuna from Portsmouth to Glouchester again this week. Only this week a d 43 inch Bluefin fell to a popping plug on spin tackle. The fish was taken ofj Jeffries.

Huntington is holding bass and blues. There are bunker in Northport and the alligator blues are around them with bass underneath. Cold Spring Harbor seems to come alive every morning and evening with bass and blues. Outgoing water is best for me.

I fished Montauk with Jim DelGrosso and Mitch Bernstein on Monday. It was a weird day! It began with us fogged in on the South side. We saw a boat very close to shore and heard later that they got into some trouble. To quote Captain Blinkin and Captain McMurray; “Bow out” and “ Let’s be careful out there!’ We took some small bass, blues and a nice Albie. We then traveled back to the North Bar and although the sun was out, we saw plenty of guide boats but no fish. Outer Shag was holding lots of blues but they were deep. While dredging the blues we nailed some nice Bass in 14 feet of water. Two keeper bass were among the pick at Shagwon. As the tide ebbed, we headed back to the point and tried to pick at bass on structure to no avail. I saw some birds far to the west and ran the Scout, full speed towards them. I drew a crowd of other guides. We got there first, Mitch cast and was hooked up and we landed a nice Albie. That was it! Looking forward to fishing the Montauk Redbone on Thursday and Friday (28,29)! If you are curious go to www.redbone.org BASSt, Captain Robin Calitri
