Fishing Report Salmon River PulaskiNY

Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Salmon River Pulaski NY Fishing Report:
Complementary Fishing Report Tips:
-
Steelhead top to bottom of river. Middle to lower has very few anglers and lot's of uneducated Steelhead. Water level is a nice comfortable 335cfs. I'd recommend fishing the Transitional Holding and also the Winter Holding spot's. Noticing more Steelhead moving deeper into their Winter homes.
-
Prime Time for Steelhead?
Most anglers would say Nov. Yes, it's a nice time. The fish fight the hardest.
I personally prefer to target Dec., Jan. and Feb. The reason why is great'r opportunity. More places to fish, less fishing pressure from guides and shore anglers.
Presently and Normally, what we are seeing:
1. Less angler fishing pressure do the normal colder temp's. You normally only find the serious Steelheader out in these temp's. Opening up a lot of prime Steelhead real-estate for you to enjoy. Sometimes all by yourself.
2. With Brown Tout fishing being productive out West around the Rochester area, this takes some of the guides and anglers from around here out of the picture.
3. Hunting season is upon us. This also takes anglers out and off the river. Opening it up to other's.
4. Some of the retired - elderly locals dont like the cold and snow, so some of the "Old Fart's" will be hibernating this Winter.
5. Last but not least. With the holidays just around the corner, many people are doing the family, work related holiday stuff.
All in all, less fishing pressure for the above reasons means more fishing opportunity for you. Can you say, Fish ON!! Ye-Haa!

Monday Fishing Report my 1 experienced guest was 3 for 9 off the drift boat. Hit'm in 2 out of 3 spots. I was able to get the spot's :)
-
Tuesday Fishing Report I had 1 guest, was not able to get the best spots and only fished for 2 hours before we called it a day due to him being cold, holiday - wife - kids responsibilities, wanted to get on the road for a long drive home. Only played in 2 places, passed up 5-6 hot spots on the way to the ramp. I guess I zigged when I should have zagged. Skunk!
Most guides hate reporting a slow day, skunk. I find that it only add's credibility to my Reports and Biz. Thankfully, I only get these a few times every 12 month's after guiding 100's of anglers. Glad to get that one out of the way, only 2 more to go. (harhar)
Approx. 50 or more Steelhead holding in the first spot. Mostly same boats and anglers as the previous day. The previous day was amazing with almost everyone playing w/ steelhead and some multiple times. Today, I only saw 3 steelhead played with. Colder water temp's., fishing pressure, maybe more fresh fish holding the day before that had moved, maybe these residents are getting a lil fussy, etc... would be my guess. Most anglers I spoke with were having a slooow day on Tuesday.
The 3 Steelhead we landed on Monday out of 9 played with were all bright as a dime. 2 were those many 10-12 lb'rs.

Friday Fishing Report - 2 anglers - Drift Boat - Got the Spot!
What a day! Landing 3 out of 13!
3 came reeeel close to the net, but as we lifted it's head to reach underneath it with the net, they broke off. This is normal as fish dont breath air and when you force them too, they dont like it. Ending in there teeth slicing the leader - tippet. Or violent head shakes combined with extremely fast and forceful runs. This is exactly what I wrote about in a previous post - article about "Steelhead Fish Fighting Techniques." (See below or on my websites fishing reports page)
All Steelhead were dark that I saw. Smart educated residents. We even landed a nice 3lb. Brown Trout. Incredible warm air temp's were a bonus for today. My guest's were extremely happy with todays outing. Noticed a few other Steelhead being played with in our area.
-
Two guide friend's fished the middle river off their drift boat and reported only 1 angler seen, over an approx. 3-4 mile stretch. They played with no less than 30 Steelhead! They were useing Eggs off floats and bottom bouncing eggs. (hint-hint:)
-
All of the above fish were released for your, your friends and your children's future fishing fun!
