Lake Ontario, Oneida Lake Fishing Report

Capt. Troy Creasy
August 1, 2011
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

July was nothing more than a blur last year I seemed to miss June and this year I made sure that did not happen, but July has passed us by and the crazy time is really upon us now.
From The Shipping Lanes all the way to Sodus Bay large numbers of king salmon are being found in 200 to 600 feet of water. While we usually get a taste of good salmon fishing in July, This year the entire month has been red hot. Double figure catches with a mix of salmon, lakers and steelhead are being reported daily by many captains out of Oswego.

For Chinooks, work 300 to 650 feet of water. Fish 80 to 125 down. Run Pro-Troll flashers in white and green along with Atomik flies in Big fin glow, glow, hammer, sweetpea in the sun and never forget the old TG Fly!
Troll 2.0 to 2.3 mph at the ball! Find 42 degree water and cover everything from that temperature right up to were it breaks into the 60's.

We did get a good taste of big wind several days last week and as usual it cost us a few trips and scattered the fish. A few days of stable weather and everything falls back into place.
When the winds scatter the salmon we simply slip into 70 to 105 feet of water and the brown trout have been happy to cooperate. We are taking some real good ones and occasionally there is a salmon holding in the short water as well.

Fishing on Oneida Lake is still excellent, especially on the west end of the lake. You can catch pickerel, bass, catfish and perch. If you want walleye fish in deeper water, troll purple and black Hot-n-Tots and jr. thundersticks at a depth of 25-38 ft.

Now is a great time to schedule a lake charter. The kids are out of school, the fishing is excellent and area captains are available for lake charters. The big boys are here, so where are you? Come and get them!

This is Captain Troy Creasy, Good Fishing.
