Lake Ontario Salmon River Fishing Report 9/5/10
With the weather washing out the Holiday weekend I have some time to get a report in. I apologize for the lack of them, but dark to dark fishing seven days a week does not allow me much time at the keyboard.
King Salmon continue to school in front of area tributaries and are providing great catches to the anglers that are willing to put in some time and effort.
In front of the salmon river, kings are being caught in 40 to 120 feet of water. White – mountain Dew Attractor with hammer and Pro-Am flies along with J-Plugs in glow green, glow blue and the salt and pepper are catching most of the fish.
Out of Oswego, salmon are hitting Spin Dr & pro-chip flashers in White, green, chrome in front of shredded hammer, big fin , and live lime A-Tom-Mik flies throughout the day. Before the big blow we were finding fish west & east of the Harbor in 90 to 140 FOW.
There are already good numbers of kings in the Salmon River and this weather and water flows will certainly bring more. I was happy to see many anglers plying the waters yesterday from Rt 2a down through town. I t was busy as the lake fishing was a bust.
The Oswego River has been running high for weeks and with all the rain in the forecast look for the area rivers and streams to rise again this week. What this will do is trigger a good run of early fish and once the water recedes, salmon fishing should be real good throughout the listening areas.
On Oneida Lake, smallmouth bass have been active particularly near Shackelton Shoals. Look for walleye in 40 ft. of water using jr. thundersticks in silver/blue and the perch series. We have also had reports of some yellow perch activity in 12 ft. of water in front of well-defined weed beds using fathead minnows.
I am all booked for the remainder of the lake season, but if you want to book a trip I know a few good captains that do have some days open. Give us a shout.
Same thing goes for the river season through mid November, but now is the time to plan that winter steelhead vacation. Give your self an early Christmas present and book a winter trip, It is fun peaceful and productive. See you out there.
