New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
July 9, 2007
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

This past week, the salmon fishing on Lake Ontario has been on fire. Again, they don't stop biting!!

Out of Oswego, Fair Haven and Mexico bay, boats are catching 6, 8 and even 12 fish per outing. The salmon are in 110 to 300 feet of water, 70 to 120 feet down. Flashers, dodgers, flies, and spoons. It seems that everything is working. That’s the beauty of having a lot of fish – they’re not fussy, and they are all competing for the bait. Not only are we catching good numbers of salmon, but the bigger fish are really starting to show. The Pro-Troll e-chip and the Dreamweavewr Spin Dr in white or green is working well. You may have to play with the fly color, but do not venture out without a couple of Atomik Hammer Flies.

Notice the Hammer Fly rig below is tied with a new Mustad 3X Strong 36329BLN hook You can not straighten this hook! Add to it that it is super sharp and then top it off with a single stinger Mustad stinger hook, throw an e-chip in the middle with a few beads or a korkie and you are ready to do battle with Lake Ontario's finest gamefish!

Wow! These are just a few of what we have been catching!

Thanks to Bob Popp from www.basschamp.com our Salmon River webcam is back up and running. I hear there is some action on the river for summer run skamanmia steelhead. There should be a fishable number of fish in the river at this time. Don’t be afraid to do some scouting.

Oneida Lake anglers are continuing to do very well walleye and bass. The deep and shallow water are both producing. Shackelton Shoals, Dutchman’s Bar and Lewis Point have been especially active.

The fish are biting on the Oswego River. Fish with worms, jigs and minnows. There is a variety of fish throughout the river including catfish, sheepshead, bass, and walleye. Smallmouth Bass are still active along the shoreline as well.

Sandy pond continues to produce good catches of bass and pike. Tie on a white or chartreuse spinner bait and just pound the weedlines. You will find plenty of action there.

Now is a great time to schedule a lake charter. Just log on to Lakeontariooutdoors.com There you will find, daily fishing reports, numerous links to great sites and area businesses, as well as lake charters and river guides.
