New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
September 10, 2007
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Finally an afternoon off. Well from fishing anyway. As soon as I wrap up this report, I will go up and se what is wrong with the webcam. Sorry it has been down and thanks for all the e-mails letting me know.

King & Coho Salmon continue to school in front of area tributaries and are providing great catches to the anglers that are willing to put in some time and effort.

In front of the salmon river, kings are being caught in 40 to 80 feet of water. J-Plugs, spoons, flashers and flies in glow green, glow blue, white and chromeare catching most of the fish. Get out there early for the best bite.

Out of Oswego, salmon are hitting a variety of baits … flies, spoons and j-plugs. E-Chip & Spin Doctor attractors with the hammer Atomik fly have been taking a lot of fish.

We have all been talikng about the size and condition of our chinooks. They are for the most part the smallest and skinniest we have seen. Why is it than that the cohos are huge, fat and healthy. There are definitly some chinooks that are not having a lot of luck finding food. I am working on an article for the Winter issue that willl address all of this. In the meantime, take a look at his Coho, an 18 lb. pig. Looks like this one found plenty to eat.

Steve Homola from Pa is putting this one on the wall.

Another look at the fish and the item it attached itself too!

Now look at this monster steelhead caught during the LOC Derby. A sure winner at just shy of 20 pounds. Darryl Shellhamer is mounting this beauty as well. Ironically it ate the same lure as the Coho. Red E-chip and a green Atomik fly. Notice he isn't holding it away from his body. This fish is truely HUGE!

A Few more pics fronm the last week or so.

There are already some kings in the Salmon River and more on on the way. Don’t be afraid to do some scouting before the crowds get here later this month. Despite the low water there are fish coming into the river everyday.

On Oneida Lake, smallmouth bass have been active particularly near Shackelton Shoals. Look for walleye in 40 ft. of water using jr. thundersticks in silver/blue and the perch series. We have also had reports of some yellow perch activity in 12 ft. of water in front of well-defined weed beds using fathead minnows.

Here is what I have left if you are looking for a Fall river trip.

October 2, 9, 11, 19.

See you out there, Troy
