New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
October 11, 2007
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Well despite the low water the biggest runs of the year have finally arrived. I’m talking about all the chinook and coho salmon that we pounded on all summer out on the lake. Mother nature told them it was time to make their run and they did. From Late Friday through today a steady stream of fish have been making their way upstream on the salmon river. All the fish are now scattered top to bottom, with more coming in the bottom end each day.

If you are looking to get in on the action concentrate your efforts in the fast water. Suggested baits are small rubber eggs in red, or blue, comet flies, nymph's, large stoneflies, streamers and blue egg sacs.

Much cooler temperatures and some rain is in the forecast and that would help to improve the fishing evewn more.

On the Oswego river, the low flow continues, but there are fish coming in each day.

A Few Pics

Brian Sr, Brian Jr & Eric made the annual Columbus day weekend run and had an awesonme trip.

We struggled our first night out as the water was dead calm and they did not bite. We made up for Saturday morning and then they tuned them early Sunday in the lake and later that day on the river

Kevin and Bernie joined me again today and we decided to stay way above the crowds. We still had several hundred fish go by us early and ended up picking at them all morning.

Bernie got us started early with this clean boar.

Kevin came through with one as well.

We saw at least a dozen steelhead hooked several, but only landed this one.

If the rain comes as forecasted, you will se the best run of the year. Hang On!!

Cooler temperatures should help drop the water temperature in Oneida Lake and will likely heat up the night bite for walleye. We have been successful with walleye using Jr. Thundersticks fished on the offshore shoals. The inshore nighttime migration of bait up to now has been slow but the cooler weather should increase this activity. The bass are biting silver shiners drifted in the shallows.
