Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Well the temperature was starting to cool down. We even had some ice on Tuesday morning, but the salmon fishing is still red hot. We have been spanking fish on the Salmon River, Sandy Creek and one good day on the black river.
Clyde the Glide and Fernando were up for a few days again and they brought wine, cigars and a good attitude. These guys always have fun and we added in plenty of fish as well.
Bruce and Kenny really did not want to walk, so we headed north to the dark river that had just enough water from the one day rain to plug the channel and we tuned them. It was an easy limit and we headed south. Bad news is the water dropped again.
Chub and Joe were up again and little Joes isn't little anymore. I remember when I had to lift him into the boat. Now he can handle a rod as good as anyone.
We had a mix today of kings coho and steelhead. It was a great day to fish with warm temps and a light crowd.
Check this out. A J-Plug with about a size 8/0 hook and a 5/0 hook on it. Soom goon buried it into a fish but tied a bad knot and a fish was dragging it around like jewelry. Why use something like this. Who comes up with these rigs??
The spawning grounds throughout the salmon river is loaded with kings, coho’s and steelhead. Too many steelhead for this time of year, as they are getting beat on. It amazes me that guys throw back salmon and kill trout. Why??
Joan from Fat Nancy's told me that everyone stopping in is catching fish! Ellis Cove, Fraziers Run, The upper Trestle and the gravel above the Sportsman pool are all holding good numbers of salmon. The fishing in the lower end of the river is steady with good numbers of kings and steelhead moving through there yesterday.
The Douglaston Salmon Run reported another steady day of good King fishing with some steelhead and browns mixed in. Suggested patterns are comets, nymphs, large stoneflies and streamers. For all of the bait fisherman, blue, pink and chartreuse egg sacs have been the preferred colors of choice.
Please remember to be careful, respect the water and use caution when wading.
The cool temperatures helped to improve the fishing in the Oswego river. Fresh salmon and a good push of trout has made their way into the river. Larry from the salmon shop said that fish are spread throughout the river and the fishing is great. The water level is running about 2,500cfs. Look for the most action from the Utica St. bridge to the dam. Egg sacs, skein, wooly buggers and egg pattern flies, are working well. A good number of steelhead have been reported throughout the river and anglers are finding some walleye at night.
On Oneida Lake Perch fishing is very good. Fish in the shallows, in the weeds, around the weeds and in deep water; it all seems to be working with fathead minnows being the choice bait. Nightcasting for walleyes has not materialized although an occasional one has been jigged up in deep water. The water temperature is 60 degrees and things will pick up as the temperature drops into the mid 50s.
