New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
December 10, 2007
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

The fish are still pouring in the salmon river and the bite has still been decent most days, but with cold water and typical winter weather the fish have slowed down as far as screaming runs and jumps. Winter fishing is such a pleasure in so many ways, but that burning run of a fish in 40 to 50 degree water is something you can not duplicate.

We bang them good one day an hit a few the next. Hype and his wife Nancy Jo were up over the weekend and the bite was on, once we got through a slow early morning.

We boated 5 fish and lost some others. Not bad for a Saturday in December. All of our fish came on Copper and gold hot shots.

Today I fished with long time client Steve Zimmer. We egg fished all day and hit fish in about 8 out of 20 spots, but they were hitting soft and we only fought four and landed one. My battery was dead, but I will have some pics from Steve's camera.

Back at it tomorrow. Stay tuned.

I also here of good ice up north and a decent bite on perch. I will get more details before the weekend.

I was afraid of this, water too high in one river and low water in the rest of the rivers. Starting with the Genesee River, here the water is high and has been for over two weeks. When will the flow come down? Who knows, give the river two more weeks and a bunch of cold weather and hopefully we be back to fishing this river. Once the Genesee River does come down, it will be a sure bet the fishing will be hot.

Oak Orchard; this river is running low, and will most likely stay that way for some time to come. The Oak was receiving a large portion of it’s water from the canal system. The canal has now been drained for the winter. Despite the low water, the Oak is still fishing and most of the fishing pressure has gone a way. Due to the cold weather, we have been concentrating our fishing effort in the pools, and we are using light tippits and size 10 and 12 egg flies to catch these fish. The low water extends to the areas smaller creeks. These creek will come back to normal water flow be for the Oak Orchard will. This is assuming that we have a warmer brake in the weather, for now our smaller creeks have turned into a giant slushy. If the weather stays cold we will not be fishing these creeks in tell early spring.
