New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
December 17, 2007
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

A few of the lakes to the north were just starting to freeze up, but my reports tell me that the rain and warm temps wiped out what little ice there was. We will have to wait for another cold snap before anyone does any ice fishing. Speaking of cold snaps, as I look out the window, we are getting hammered! Looks like we are in for an old fashioned winter, white Christmas and all.

The rain showers and warm temps have brought the levels up in area streams. Even though the water on the salmon river is running 335, the actual flow at Pineville is over 500. If you look on the site, http://waterdata.usgs.gov it appears they are playing with it as well.

Look for fish moving up from the lower river. Fish the pockets and the faster water in the head or tailouts of the deeper pools. The anglers having the most success have reported that the key is to COVER LOTS OF WATER because the fish are spread out. If you are fishing the small streams, try pink and chartreuse egg sacs if the water is colored and blue or white if it is clear.

Mike & Regan made the short trip up from the Salt City (Syracuse) and were met with decent temap and light winds. We floated Pineville to the Ball Park and hit fish all day long! It was their best day ever and my best for the month. No one hot spot just a good steady bite all the way down the river.

On the the Oswego, steelhead and brown trout can be found throughout the river but with the high water fish along the edges, near the dam and in the Kiddie Pool. Please use caution with the water flow and possible icy conditions with colder temperatures. There is a good number of fish there and the local guides have been doing well. Eggs sacs and small jigs under floats are working well. Wright's Landing and the area around the Marine Museum as well as the dugout at Leto Island are producing perch on minnows and spikes.

Don't be afraid to put in some time in the harbor as well as post spawn browns will be hanging in the slower water. Fish white bucktail jigs and tip them with a small minnow.

The creeks to the North have been fishing good, but ice can be a factor this time of year. Conditions will change day to day, so you really have to check it out first hand to know if they are fishing or not.

On Oneida Lake walleye anglers were spanking fish from the shore, but ice has been forming along the edges, which kind of shut things down there. If you can get out, try near Sylvan beach in the evening and cast small stickbaits in Black & Silver and Blue & Silver.
