Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Only one 8 hr. trip today, so we hit the docks early. This will actually give me a little time to catch up and do a more thorough report. So here it is:
The Kings and Coho's are here to stay with good numbers of each staging along the Southeast shoreline from Oswego to the salmon river. Lately the best depths have been 20 to 100 feet of water. This may all change with a good blow we'll have to wait and see. The entire shoreline is iced down due to the NE and East winds. The fish are hard to target as they can be anywhere from the surface down to 200 feet. YUK!
We are seeing salmon packed with bait and many bright chrome fish. It has been a real good season for me overall and I have another month to go on the lake, and then the river season starts. Anyway, be prepared for a great run up the salmon and oswego rivers as soon as we get some cool wet weather. They start running water this Friday night, so I am sure we will have some fish run up the salmon river. We are seeing a fair number of fin clipped chinooks, as the success of the pen-rearing projects are evident. We are also still picking at the browns. I am running a combination of cut-bait and howie flies. Colors change with the time of day and light and water conditions, but green has stood out as the best color overall. Green howie flies behind a white or silver-glo dodger has been red hot off the dipseys, and Fish attractors in the skunk, sea-runner and golden boy patterns have been the best for us. The new challenger heads are working well in green and blue. With my strike-vision underwater camera, I am able to see exactly what that lure is doing. What a great system. It may not guarantee a boat load everyday, but what a super addition to your arsenal. It's almost unfair. (Not)! Talk to you soon. Troy
