New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
January 26, 2004
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

I am between sport shows, but wanted to bring you up to date on what is going on around the lake.

Salmon River-The River is still running at 350 cfs. the upper river is fishable from Altmar down to the Trestle. You will find a lot of anchor ice and slush from there down until mid day or when the temps rise into the upper teens. (Maybe that will happen in June?)

There are a few fish being caught each day in the School House, but it is tough going. Temps yesterday hit minus 26 at my house. Too cold to fish in my book!

Oswego River-This River is choked with fish but good luck getting to them. Anchor ice and slush will make up most of your catch. The good news is that temps this week will rise into the 20's and the fishing should be good when this happens.

Tackle-Eggs have been working good, but tend to freeze in the cold water. I have been running small jigs and I can put them in my mouth to keep them thawed out. They taste way better than gooey egg sacs, trust me. Pink and yellow have been my best lately.

You can dead drift them, but I like to fish them under a float. If you use a 1/8 ounce or bigger, you can get away from the rosary bead method, (running numerous small shot up your line), because the jig alone will be heavy enough. you may want to put one medium split shot, a foot or so below your float anyway.

I hear good reports from the Niagara. I have a good client that also fishes with John Delorenzo on the Niagara and they boated over 40 fish on January 17 & 18. All steelhead up to 18 pounds. It is tough there right now due to all the cold.

Ice fishing-Great Perch catches are being reported from Sodus Bay all the way up to Canada. Bring your Ice Hut and a good heater. The ice is getting thick to, so have a gas powered auger or be prepared for a work out. Ice is running 10 to 20 inches depending on where you are fishing.

Ramblings

I am just riding out the storm waiting for a break in the weather. I have another show this week and then I am heading south to lay belly up in the sand and look at thong bikini's for a while. Somebody has to do it!

Shelley and I would like to thank all of you for your patronage and support you have shown us over the years. Without good customers, our business would not survive.
