New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
February 15, 2004
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Lake Ontario / Salmon River Fishing Report 2/14/04

By: Troy

-------------------------------------------------------

Dave and Chris Robinson spent a few hours with me today learning the art of fishing jigs for trout. We braved the wind and big swells in the Oswego Harbor and landed five real nice trout. We had one double but one of the fish got wrapped around something and beat us.

The wind got the best uf us by 11:00, so we packed it in.

We saw two other boats also land a few fish and the guys on the wall were doing well on eggs and jigs.

Dave and Chris had a banner day on the lake with me last September and held their own again today. 5 for 6, not a bad total for only a few hours effort.

Along with taking home the largest trout they aver caught, they now have a better understanding of the tributary fishery, targeting post spawn and pre sapwn trout and having a good time. Dave did say though that his next trip would be in June.

Salmon River-The River is still running at 350 cfs. the upper river is fishable from Altmar down to the Trestle. You will find a lot of anchor ice and slush from there down until mid day or when the temps rise into the upper teens. (Maybe that will happen in June?)

There are a few fish being caught each day in the School House, but it is tough going.

Tackle-Eggs have been working good, but tend to freeze in the cold water. I have been running small jigs and I can put them in my mouth to keep them thawed out. They taste way better than gooey egg sacs, trust me. Pink and yellow have been my best lately.

You can dead drift them, but I like to fish them under a float. If you use a 1/8 ounce or bigger, you can get away from the rosary bead method, (running numerous small shot up your line), because the jig alone will be heavy enough. you may want to put one medium split shot, a foot or so below your float anyway.

Ice fishing-Great Perch catches are being reported from Sodus Bay all the way up to Canada. Bring your Ice Hut and a good heater. The ice is getting thick to, so have a gas powered auger or be prepared for a work out. Ice is running 10 to 20 inches depending on where you are fishing.
