Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Tough Fishing this Weekend for Most
By: Troy Creasy
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you were on Lake Ontario from 8 AM Saturday morning until late Sunday afternoon then you froze your butt off like the rest of us. A windy cold front barreled across the lake and shut the fishing down throughout the weekend.
The only highlight was the walleye fishing Saturday night, as the west wind packed the fish into the inside cut. While most only did a few fish, they were there in good numbers and a some of the boats beat on them bad! Thats why they call it fishing.
Saturday started out good with the fish biting at daybreak but as soon as that wind switched the fog moved in and the fish shut down.
Spoons have been working the best. NK's in green and silver "The Diehard" Black and silver and purple with a glow ladderback are all good choices.
Atomik dodgers with blue flies are also taking quite a few fish. Look for the schools of bait and fish around them. I found active fish coming from 39 to 44 degree water. Vary your speed and don't be afraid to crank it up Faster is better most days!
Remember the area around the Nine Mile Point is off limits to boating. I see the Coast Guard patrolling this area, so make sure you stay outside of the buoys.
The walleye fishing on Oneida Lake continues to produce good catches. You want to get there just before dark and fish worms or cast small rapalas. The best areas have been the mouth of the Barge Canal, or the mouths of Fish Creek and Oneida Creek.
I want to remind everyone that the Masters Walleye Circuit Tournament is going to be held in Henderson Harbor on May 22 & 23. Some of the top pro’s in walleye fishing will be in Henderson for this big event. This is a team tournament with large cash prizes. There is still time to enter so put your team together now. You can get more info by contacting the Henderson Harbor Chamber of Commerce at 938-5568.

Now is the time to schedule a lake charter. The fishing is excellent! I am now booking Spring and Summer lake charters. I have some good open days in May. June and July for Browns and August and early September for Salmon.
My Fall river days are all but booked. I only have September 16, November 24, 29, 30. I do have other guides with open dates, so give me a call if you are interested.
Tight Lines, Troy
