Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

This past weekend was our annual Harborfest and what a great time! We ate and drank too much, slept too little and fished in rougher water than we should have. Our crews all managed to take some nice fish. Speed and boat control was tough due to high Northeast winds but the fish are still there. Seems like I just keep saying the same thing. Great Fishing and more great fishing. Where are you?
We took most of our fish in 65 to 100 feet of water the NE winds brought temp way up and we found the fish down 50 to75 feet. Michigan Stingers in lemon/lime and the NK Diehard spoon was working well. Some kings are comng on cutbait behind golden boy and skunk slashers.
From Mexico Bay all the way to Sodus Bay large numbers of king salmon are being found in 200 to 300 feet of water. While we usually get a taste of good salmon fishing in July, This year the entire month has been red hot. Catches of 10 to 20 salmon a trip are being reported by many captains out of Oswego.
Work 200 to 350 feet of water. Fish 80 to 120 down. Run Pro-Troll flashers in white and green along with the same color G-Flys. Troll at high speed 2.5 to 3.0 mph at the ball! Just keep the speed up and cover water. The brown trout continue to bite along the shoreline in 80 to 125 feet of water, The pressure has been light lately as most anglers are looking for and finding the larger king salmon.
Bass fishing in and around mexico bay is providing some really good catches. Fish small jigs tipped with Mister Twister grubs. Slowly bounce the jigs off rocky bottoms and work the shoals and drop-offs. Crabs and worms are always a good bet. Also try the ares around 4 mile point in Scriba and the a the green can just west of Oswego. Worms and crayfish drifted along the bottom are always the top producers there, but many anglers prefer to cast or troll small crankbaits.
My good friend Angelo Petito tells me that there has been some bass and northern pike action on Sandy pond and Lakeview Marsh, especially along the weed lines. Cast spinnerbaits, rubberworms, small crankbaits and of course don’t forget the jitterbugs and buzzbaits for some hot top water action. Angelo also won $1,000 last week in the $1,000 /day derby with a 25. 78 pound salmon. Way to go Ang.
Fishing on Oneida Lake is still excellent , especially on the west end of the lake. You can catch pickerel, bass, catfish and perch. If you want walleye fish in deeper water, troll purple and black Hot-n-Tots and jr. thundersticks at a depth of 25-38 ft.
Now is a great time to schedule a lake charter. The kids are out of school, the fishing is excellent and area captains are available for lake charters. Just log on to Lakeontariooutdoors.com There you will find, daily fishing reports, numerous links to great sites and area businesses, as well as lake charters and river guides.
