New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
January 9, 2005
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

All the warm weather this past week makes it feel like early April instead of January.

This has put a serious damper on the areas ice fishing activity. My advise is to stay away from the lakes until we get another good deep freeze. Any ice out there now is unstable and should be avoided.

The steelhead fishing has been fantastic, but the rivers are running high and it will be a few more days before the water drops to a good fishable level. The water in the salmon river is 1800 plus run-off. Over 2,000 at Pineville.

The last trip out, we hooked ten nice fish, all on blue sacs under a float. I personally haven’t seen fishing this good on the salmon river in some time. The warmer weather had them turned right on. Take advantage of this winter thaw while it lasts and get out there.

Lake Ontario Outdoors Celebrates it's 5th Year!

Five years of LOO! It is hard to believe it has been that long.

With the tremendous support and growth we have experienced we have decided to go to the next level in 2005. Starting with the Winter/Show issue, LOO will be a full color publication!

Thank you again for allowing us to be the leading publication in promoting fishing, hunting, boating and outdoor sports in New York State.

LOO STATS;

Lake Ontario Outdoors is an outdoor magazine published four times a year and enjoyed by over 160,000 readers.

Lake Ontario Outdoors features extensive coverage of the entire Lake Ontario Region.

We directly target Great Lakes Sportsmen and women. When you compare us to similar publications, it is easy to see that Lake Ontario Outdoors advertising rates are a real bargain. Our readers are people that fish and travel across New York State.

Starting with a small local newspaper in 1996, under the name of Salmon River Success the need for a lake wide publication was evident and the first issue of LOO was printed in 1999. We haven’t looked back. The success of this publication is a result of the dedication of our staff.

Our staff of writers are second to none. You will not find more knowledgeable outdoor people anywhere. Our writers live here, work here and play here.

LOO technical and how to articles are written by full-time professional guides and captains who take time away from their busy schedule to let you know what is really working.

LOO regional reports, are written by people who really are out there everyday, talking and working with the public seeing what is going on. Many are local business owners, who hear everything and pass it along to our readers.

LOO conservation and news cast reports are written by people who are involved in the communities and are dedicated to protecting our resource.

LOO is growing at a tremendous rate.

We also want to let you know that our website is up and running and we offer free links to all of our advertisers and unbelievably low banner ad rates. Visit us at www.lakeontariooutdoors.com

High Adventure Celebrates 20 Years!

As we begin our 20th fishing season, Shelley and I would like to thank all of you for your support over the years. I am truly blessed to have met so many great people. I feel young, yet they are calling me the old man on the river. What is up with that?

I also want to thank the many guests that endured the boat shuffling that took place when I dropped two engines this season. Thanks to several other great boat captains, we were able to cover every trip and caught fish on every boat we leased.

Kings Rule!

If you fished with us in 2004 you know how good the salmon fishing was. The numbers are in and according to the state's creel census, there were over 51,000 king salmon harvested in the lake - the largest individual number we've seen taken in the last 10 years. Overall, over 87,000 trout and salmon were harvested in the lake, the largest number we've seen since 1999!

Reservations!

We have to stress the importance of making your reservations early. . Remember, it is never too early to book your trip. You can book using Visa or MC. Feel free to give us a call.

High Adventure Gift Certificates!

We are offering gift certificates again this year for Lake and river charters and magazine subscriptions. Call Shelley and she will take care of the details.

Family 2005 marks a new beginning for my son, Jeremy. He recently graduated college with a degree in Geology. Shelley's oldest daughter Brandy is getting married in May and she is doing well in the insurance business. Her son Hunter, (The Brain) is going full-steam at Plattsburg he has a 4.0 gpa and is bored. He will have his bachelors in psychology in three years and is going on for his doctorate.

As for my wonderful wife Shelley, she is always working on something. She manages both businesses, keeps herself in great shape, she does flowers and arrangements for weddings, assists customers, families and friends with interior and exterior decorating ideas, she paints, sews, landscapes and makes the best dam venison chili in New York!

Product Reviews

I could write a book about all the companies that I pro-staff for and the ones that support both of our businesses.

Maxima. Their new fluorocarbon line. The best there is period!

Lowrance You know the name, I don't have to say much more. They supply serious anglers with the best fish finders made. They are also wonderful supporters of all tournaments and derbies.

Shimano The new Tekota line counter reels They cost more, but you get what you pay for. The drags are perfect! I was skeptical when they came to me, and asked me to field test them, but what a great reel. Just put one in your hand and you will know what I mean.

Scotty Downriggers This company gives me nothing. I pay for them like everyone else. I use them because they are the best. Fast, smooth, easy to use and they don't break, ever.

Mustad This company had expanded into new fields and all their products are high quality. They are producing line, swivels, new hooks, The new barrel swivels, 77500 Black Rolling Swivel w/diamond eye work as good as any ball bearing swivel, at a fraction of the cost. The new Thor line has been performing great on the rivers and streams. Their hooks, again too many to mention. For river fishing, nothing beats the old 37132.

Luhr Jensen From Dodgers, to Hot shots, to dipseys, to cedar planks this company had been around for ever. They work closely with us, producing custom colored plugs and dodgers for our field testers.

Pro- Troll My good friend Dick Poole in his never ending search for the best salmon lures, came up with the e-chip flasher. If you fish the lake, you know the product. Great colors, quality workmanship. Thanks, Dick.

Walker Strike Vision. My underwater camera. What a great invention. Entertainment, combined with an effective fishing tool, that no captain should be without.

G-Fly & Atomic Fly Two great trolling flies, each with their own individual features.

Thank you to all our advertisers and sponsors.

As we begin 2005 I want to wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday and a healthy and prosperous new year!

I hope this finds all of you in good health and may 2005 be a wonderful year for all of us. See you soon and God Bless America.

Sincerely, Troy & Shelley
