New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
April 9, 2005
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Tough Week on the River!!

Tough, Tough week at the office. We did some fish most days but took it on the chin the others. Right now if you don't skunk, that is a good day. We did manage to land some today, so hopefully things will start improving. The downside is that the weekend is here, the water is dropping and the crowd is building. Wish I could take weekends off.

So why is the best month of the year, providing such slow fishing? Answer... No Fish.

Pretty simple. You can't catch what isn't there. We all know steelhead numbers are way, way down. Now combine that with the fact that 95% of the steelhead are in the Fly zone and hatchery, it just doesn't leave much to fish for.

The good news is they have to come by us to get back to the lake and we will have at least two weeks of hot fishing before it is all over. It does seem like it is improving slightly each day.

The real dissapointment is the creeks to the north. Jefferson County has had a one fish limit for several years and it has done nothing to improve the returns. I have never seen so few fish in the Sandy's as I have this Spring. We floated South on Thursday morning. The water was righteous!! We saw one fish and had zero bites. I was the first boat down this creek since last Fall. We should have smoked them and instead, we zipped.

We have to find out why our steelhead are not returning. The DEC is doing a decent job, but this needs to take precedence. Reducing limits is not the answer. Almost everyone is putting all of their steelhead back and the numbers are still dwindling. We need to fix the problem.

Enough Whining. Here is what we did catch!

Steve with a nice hen he caught in the Snag pool.

Steve with a dropback male he took in the Schoolhouse.

Jeff with his first Steelhead A nice Chromer!!

Jeff with his first Brown trout!

I took Shelley out one afternoon where I knew a few fish were holding in a small stream. This is the picture after she got her butt kicked by a chromer!

All Fish were released to fight another day!!!!

I still have April 13 and May 2,3,4 open.

See you on the water, Troy
