New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Salmon River and Trib Report

Friday we decided to take a road trip. Met up with Jeff Pierce from Mustad on the river. He has been spanking the steelhead fishing skein eggs under floats and casting crankbaits and letting them swing in the current.

The water started out perfect and there was plenty of fish to go around. About 9:30 the siren blew, the water came up 2 feet and turned chocolate. It was over. We toughed it out another hour for only one quick headshake. I guy below us did hit one more on a jig, but the bite was over and those fish will be safe for a long time.

We retreated to a few smaller stream and although there was fish in everyone we stopped at, the goons were out in full force. It amazies me that as good as these fresh trout gobble eggs, worms and flies, that some guys just won't fish , they have to poke. And poke at them they were!! We landed a few fish and had to get out of there. I couldn't take it anymore.

Back on the Salmon river Saturday and anyone that owns a fishing rod was on the water today. I spectacular day with bright sun and temps in the 50's. No wonder there was a guy on every rock.

I had two new guys out today Joe and Steve. Joe has fished the river for years, and wanted to get Steve hooked on steelhead. Well, we accomplished that mission in the first spot. About the 10th drift of the am and Steve was tight into a good chromer. The Pineville bridge comes through again.

Lot's and lot's of boats so we headed to the Sportsamn Hole. 2nd drift Bang Steve is on again a nice male about 9 pounds, just had to have the pink egg sac.

Now we had to work just to find a place to fish. I got the boat positioned above a nice seam and we switched to floats. Bang Joe was into a nice male brown.

Steve hooked up in the same spot but the fish beat us.

In the next spot, Joe had one on and that one beat us too. Since we didn't have a lot of places to fish, we decided to run a few plugs. We hit a nice female brown on a green pirate Hotshot.

From that spot down, there was people everywhere. Not realy any place to fish. all in all a great day to be out on the river. I talked to several other boats that never hooked a fish, but we saw few bank anlgers catch a couple of browns. Just the right spot at the right time.

The higher water really put the fish in high gear and we had some great fights today. All Fish were released, unharmed. StayTuned for more.......
