Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report
OK, OK, OK I am updating my report.
The salmon season is now in full swing and area rivers are receiving a fair amount of fish. Numbers of kings are definitely down so far this season and only time will tell how things will play out.
On the Salmon River, fish are scattered top to bottom. We have been fishing the Douglaston Salmon Run and had a few decent days this week with fish moving through the day and other days it slows right down after a few hours.
The Staircase, Town Pool and Ball Park fished well early in the week, but things have slowed considerably with anglers reporting a mix of trout & Coho's.
If you like fishing up river the Sportsman Pool, Trestle hole and Schoolhouse Pool all have a lot of fish. The Upper and Lower Fly Fishing areas have been consistently producing action on a daily basis but are getting heavy pressure. If you're looking to avoid the crowds spread out and cover lots of water.
The water is 500 cfs but it will go down to 335 cfs on Friday. The smaller area streams are too low for fish to migrate. We need some more rain, but I always say that.
On the Oswego River, Andy Bliss from Chasin Tails Adventures tells me that the water level has been fluctuating somewhat and is running about 2,200cfs. The cooler weather helped to push some of the fish that had been holding in the harbor, upstream. Most of the activity continues to be from the Utica St. bridge to the dam. Egg sacs, skein, wooly buggers, egg pattern flies, rubber eggs and floating stickbaits are working well. Anglers are finding a few steelhead and browns mixed in among the salmon with roe, egg sacs and worms being the baits of choice.
On Oneida Lake night casting for the walleye is just beginning with access points such as launch sites, bridge abutments and marinas seeing some activity. Stickbaits have been working well. Deep water trolling for walleye during the day has been successful using lead core and downrigger techniques. Smallmouth bass have been active over the rockpiles and perch can be found in 12-15 ft. of water using fathead minnows.
