Salmon River Lake Ontario Fishing Report

Capt. Troy Creasy
April 9, 2008
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water is pushing 3,000 cfs with run-off, which is no surprise considering the amount of snow left on the hill. We wil be seeing it go much higher if the warm weather continues and we get any rain.

It is kind of tough right now on the big river but we are taking a few each day. The good news is that even with the dirty water I still see a lot of fish, they just aren't biting good but they will, oh they will.

The streams are high, but the smallest ones are fishing good if you are in the right place.

Friday, Earl and Maurice where up on their first trip. We started out hitting them ok but then they shut down on us and the afternoon was wet and cold.

Chris and Ralph spent the weekend with me and we stayed on the salmon river and were rewarded with a few each day including several browns. Just enough to make Ralph's bithday a memorable one.

We took our fish on pink eggs and glo roe trout beads, as well as a few on Luhr Jensen Hot Shots in gold and pink.

Steelhead fishing on the Oak Orchard River is picking up water temperatures have reached 45 degrees to day 4/7/08. These warm water temperatures are drawn in a few new fish every day. For now water flows remain high, however water clarity is about ideal for spring. The weather forecast for this coming week is supposed to be warm and dry for the first part of the week. This will allow the water flows on the Oak Orchard River to drop down to a more fish able level. This week and the next two week should be the best steelhead fishing of the spring.
The areas smaller creeks and rivers are an ideal fishing conditions. Water temperatures in the smaller rivers and creeks will fluctuate more widely than the Oak. Expect slow fishing action first thing in morning, but once water temperatures start to rise, fishing action will increase. Productive flies are: all of your favorite flies you like to fish during the spring.

The lake is turning on big time as brown trout are hovering off of every river mouth on the shoreline looking for warm water and food. If the winds are on-shore this packs them in tight and the bite id red hot. If it blows off-shore this scatters everything and conditions become tough.

Watch the winds and get that boat ready!

I still have April 9, 13 and May 8 for the river.

If you need another day this month, give me a shout as I know a few good guides with days open.

A buddy of mine was up on the tughill today and said there is still a solid 2 feet of water filled snow on the ground. Look for plenty of water in the coming weeks.

Remember to stay safe and respect this high water. There is no neeed to wade out, the fish are at your feet!!!

Target Species:

steelhead, brown trout
