Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report
Well the walleye opener was good this past weekend as the warm weather helped turn on old marble eye. While the Oswego River fished good for some it seemed that others struggled, but I did hear they smoked them on the east end of Oneida Lake right in front of the canal! Look for the walleye to be in 20 to 30 feet of water.
Sonars, jigs and stickbaits and silver Blue & silver & orange and gold have been the hot ticket at most locations.
Bullhead fishing continues to be good on Sandy as well at the mouths of area rivers.
The Salmon River steelhead season refuses to wind down. Drop backs continue to pour out of the hatchery and fishing is steady. Look for most of the fish to be back in the lake by late next week. Fish the fast water at the heads and tails of the deep pools. Eggs, worms, single hook spinners and big flies are all working.
Lake Ontario brown trout fishing in the Oswego / Mexico Bay area has been up and down. If the winds are right, you hammer them, if not you pick away at them. Fishi the shoreline in 8 to 15 FOW and run smithwick and reef runner stickbaits off the planer boards back 80 to 150 feet. Feel free to add a one or two split shot to help with weeds and keep them down and extra foot or so.
On the downriggers, Black / silver white belly spoons are working early, then switch to dreamweaver Super slims in the chicken wing, mixed veggie and rosemary's baby. Vary your trolling speed from 2. 0 to 2.5 and don't troll in a straight line. S turns work the best as any speed variations can and will trigger strikes from Mr. Brown Trout.
With my river season in its final week, my thoughts are turning to the big pond, Oneida walleye and long bearded gobblers. If you love and live the outdoors, May and October always compete for your top two months of the year. Whatever you decide to do this spring, do it safely and respect the rights of others.
Remember how privileged we are to have the public water and woods that we all too often take for granted. Please give something back, even if it just picking up an empty styrofoam cup. It all makes a difference. Enjoy the spring, stay safe and catch a big one.
