Salmon River, Oak Orchard Fishing Report

Capt. Troy Creasy
November 19, 2008
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

If you are a November fisherman, the odds are you are looking for two things. Rain & Trout!
Well we have plenty of both right now. Browns & steelhead are very abundant in all area streams and although we are dealing with high water in some right now, the conditions will improve daily.
On the Salmon River, the water flow is about 1100 cfs plus run-off and will continue at that level through at least Monday. You may even see it go higher anytime now.

Steelhead and browns are scattered throughout the deeper holes and gravel areas of the river. The anglers having the most success have reported that the key is to cover lots of water because the fish are spread out.
Suggested patterns are blue and white egg sacs, trout beads in glow roe and sun orange, estaz eggs, glo bugs, nymph's and large stoneflies. Work the area around the Schoolhouse, Trestle pool, sportsman pool as well as the town, Ball Park $ DSR areas.

Fishing has been so successful this entire season; I would be lying if I said I was not concerned about the pressure these fish are receiving.

We all know catch & release works, but pounding the same fish and the same spot over and over can not be good for them. Float fishing is a killer method. It is easy to do and works extremely well. Some say it is too easy?

Instead of showing off that you are a stud and pounding 20 fish in one hole, after you get a few, or spend a few hours there, why not move on and let the hole rest.
If you have racked up some good numbers and have taken all of your hero shots, why not spend some time learning a new hole or a different method. Just a thought.

On the Oswego River the water level has climbed to about 9,000 cfs and that is a near perfect level for everyone

Western New York fishing report by Jay Peck -www.jaypeckguides.com

The water flows in the streams and rivers for Western New York have been low for most of the month. Hopefully the wet weather we are getting will help to improve conditions.
Starting with Oak Orchard River, water flows here still remained decent and should stay that way for the next few weeks. Despite the heavy fishing pressure, the Oak has been fishing fairly decent with steady runs of Brown trout. Steelhead are now starting to show up more consistently the numbers of steelhead will continue to improve as we move closer to December.
The Genesee River, has been fishing good throughout the past week. However with wet weather on its way I suspect the Genesee River will soon become too high to fish.
Until then the Genesee will be producing good numbers of steelhead and will continue to do so as long as the Genesee is in fishing conditions.
The smaller streams and creeks are still suffering from low water. This is where the wet weather will have the biggest influence. If we get enough rain this will turn on and the fishing will become excellent. Productive fly patterns; used your favorite egg patterns and small to medium-sized nymphs.

The winds kind of spoiled everything on Oneida Lake over the weekend, but the night bite is very good when you can get out.
Fishing in about 8 feet of water has been very productive with blue and silver stickbaits or you can jig with sonar's in the deeper water. Drifting minnows in the shallows along the structures is producing bass and perch.
