Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report
Here we go…… High water time. Recent heavy rains and snow melt have area rivers and creeks bank full. Although this will make it tough going for a few days, it will set us up for some wonderful conditions as they all drop. When this happens, look for spawning steelhead to be in just about every trib that flows in the lake. Time to spread out and do some exploring. Learn new spots, new techniques. Don't just go to the same hole and do the same thing. Spring fishing is all about walking and covering water.
Eggs and beads are always top producers, but don't forget about the worms! Worms are a go to bait when we have run-off and colored water. I am talking about real red worms and night crawlers, but rubber worms in all colors will get the job done as well.
Although we have had some warm days, the ice on sandy pond is good thanks to the cold nights. The perch bite has been good with small bait such as minnows working well. Remember that the pike season closes on the 15th.

Conditions are starting to act a lot like spring for Western New York. You don't like the fishing conditions just wait a day, it'll change. As you can imagine right now everything is flooded. The way the weather forecast is looking, conditions will stay this way for at least through this week. However all the snow and ice is now melted off, this will give our streams and rivers a chance to gain a few degrees in water temperatures. Right now most of our streams water temperatures are holding somewhere in the mid to upper 30° mark. I suspect when water flows, moderate we will have good runs of fresh steelhead. The way the forecast is looking the smaller streams will start to moderate by the end of the week, Oak Orchard River will start to come in to shape sometime next week. We will be fishing in high off color water for the next couple of weeks. With good water temperatures this will not be much of an issue.
